This sermon explores the reality of ambient anxiety — the persistent background unease that many of us live with in an increasingly connected and uncertain world. Drawing on Jesus’ teaching from the Sermon on the Mount, Ian Sansbury reflects on the repeated and challenging command: “Do not worry.” Rather than offering easy reassurance, the sermon looks honestly at why anxiety is so deeply wired into us, and how Jesus invites us into a different way of living — rooted in the present, holding things more ligh

This Candlemas sermon reflects on the presentation of Jesus in the temple — a moment of recognition, waiting, and revelation. Drawing on Luke’s Gospel, Sally Moring explores the deep humanity of Christ: fully divine, yet fully sharing in our weakness, poverty, joy, and sorrow. Through the figures of Simeon and Anna, the sermon invites us to consider what it means to wait faithfully, to watch attentively, and to recognise the light of Christ even when it is fragile and costly. As the church turns from the se

This sermon reflects on one of the most dramatic turning points in the New Testament: the conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus. Drawing on the reading from Acts, it explores how a single moment can redirect a life — and, in this case, shape the future of the Christian church itself. Beyond the drama of Paul’s conversion, the sermon invites us to consider how faith often grows more quietly today: through trust, welcome, patient explanation, and communities willing to walk alongside those taking their f

This service gives thanks for the life of Anne Berry, a faithful member of St Mary’s Wendover and the wife of a former vicar of the parish. Gathered in sorrow and gratitude, we remember a long and richly lived life, marked by faith, service, music, friendship, and deep love for family and community. Rooted in the Christian hope of resurrection, the service reflects on Anne’s life, her place within the church and village, and the promise of peace and rest in God’s eternal care. It is offered in remembrance,

Derek Turnham
In this guest sermon, Very Rev Canon Derek Turnham of St Anne’s Roman Catholic Church speaks candidly about Christian unity — not as a polite aspiration, but as a moral and spiritual necessity in a fractured world. Drawing on Isaiah’s prophetic tradition and the Gospel’s stark declaration that “now is the judgment of this world,” the sermon confronts the consequences of Christian disunity: distorted readings of scripture, the misuse of faith to justify violence and power, and the silencing of the poor and o

This sermon marks the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, drawing on resources prepared by churches in Armenia — a nation whose Christian faith has been shaped by centuries of endurance, persecution, and renewal. Reflecting on readings from Isaiah, John’s Gospel, and Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the sermon explores unity not as uniformity or sentiment, but as faith expressed through justice, humility, and care for others. True Christian unity, we are reminded, is lived out in practical compassion: feedin

In this sermon, Sally Moring reflects on words of hope spoken into a world marked by uncertainty and exile. Drawing on Isaiah 42 and the baptism of Christ, she explores a vision of hope that does not shout or dominate, but is steady, gentle, and enduring. Set against global anxiety and personal disillusionment, this is a reminder that Christian hope is not wishful thinking or optimism rooted in circumstance. It is hope grounded in God’s faithfulness — a light that rises quietly, calls us by name, and sustai

Hello and welcome to St Mary's. If you are a new visitor, we have a page for you to get to know us and learn more about planning a visit.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Welcome!

The following information is specifically for those planning to visit us for the first time, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at St Mary's Church in Church Lane, Wendover, for our two main Sunday services each week, which start at 9.00am and 10.45am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you will be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

Plan your journey

Accessibility

There is wheelchair access, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There are disabled toilets in the Church Centre, which you can find through the door towards the front of the church on the left hand side.

Our Main Sunday Services

Our 9am Holy Communion is a more traditional service, including music and hymns in an established style but using up-to-date language. It will probably appeal to those who are used to more formal Anglican worship.  There is no provision for children at this service.

Our 10.45am Sunday Worship services follow a more informal style with contemporary worship songs. These services are typically most suitable for families. Children of all ages are very welcome and we have activities for younger children at the back of church. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, we share Communion at this service. The first and third Sundays do not include Communion and are designed to be rich in teaching and learning for people of all ages - from 2 to 92!

You can find details of our other services here.

Getting Connected

Small Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some afternoons and some evenings. Check out our Church Life section on this website to see if there’s a group that you'd like to join, or we can put you in touch with a small group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.

Serving and Volunteering

If you want to get involved in the life of the church, why not sign up to serve on a team. We are always looking for volunteers to get involved in different aspects of our work.
